Fascia release, also known as myofascial release, is a therapy which aims to increase circulation and relieve tension in the body. Fascia is the connective tissue beneath the skin which attaches, stabilises and separates muscles and other internal organs.1 Using gentle sustained pressure on the fascia, restrictions are removed to relieve pain and restore motion.
In a typical fascia release session, a practitioner will work systematically to rotate the patient’s joints, manipulate muscles and open up any spaces which need tension release. In a whole-body treatment, the practitioner will work through every finger and toe, up to the ankles, knees, hips, wrists, elbows, shoulders and neck.
Unlike a traditional massage, the goal of fascia release is not just temporary relief and relaxation, but the foundation for lasting structural improvement. While used for many years in Chinese medicine, Western studies are also beginning to recognise the effectiveness of fascia release for pain relief.2
Fascia release is a great foundational treatment to try when you first begin Chinese medicine treatment, especially as a preparation for acupuncture. Following the procedure, the body will respond more effectively to acupuncture as the meridians have already been partially opened, and circulation and energy are flowing more readily.
Acuwell now offers fascia release as part of acupuncture packages, either local treatment or whole-body. Contact us today to learn more or book an appointment!
